Book Review: Emergency Food Storage & Survival Handbook
November 12, 2008
As promised here is another review on a book about Food Storage.
Emergency Food Storage & Survival Handbook is a book I bought a while back knowing one day I would venture down the path of storing more than just a months worth of food at a time. Now that I’m going down that path I have found this book to be very good. It’s written by Peggy Layton who many in the survivalist / prepper network know and trust. She has written several books including a series on how to use your food storage, which as we know is important because when you store food you must use that food or you’re just wasting your money.
The book is 274 pages long and below is the break down of those pages.
- 30 pages of short term storage info
- 11 pages of water storage info
- 51 pages of long term storage info
- 16 pages of obtaining food to store
- 75 pages to help you implement your food storage plan
- 83 pages of recipes
The short term storage info section talks about what you need for a 72 hour kit / bug out bag. It also talks about different methods of cooking food including dutch ovens and solar ovens. I think this kind of general info is good and it doesn’t deviate to far from the major topic of the book so I won’t hold it against Ms. Layton for throwing it in.
The water storage section is ok and includes some limited info on water treatment. Unfortunately this section is sub-par and I would recommend other books and websites as a resource if you want to know about water treatment and storage.
The long term storage portion of this book is the reason you would buy it in my opinion. It’s covers enough and covers it well enough so that you can get started in food storage. I wouldn’t say this is the end all be all to food storage books but it’s definitely a good start. The author goes into thing such as what you should store and what can go harm your stored food. She talks about storage methods such as using dry ice as I did the other day.
Stars: 4 of 5 stars
Conclusion: If you haven’t started reading books on food storage then go ahead and buy this book. It covers one topic and covers it well. Again I won’t say this is the only book you will need but it’s a very good start. If you have read some other books on food storage then you may want to check it out on Amazon by using the “look inside” option.
