Coleman Dual Fuel 533
November 5, 2008
I bought the Coleman Dual Fuel 533 stove a few years ago to do some backpacking with. It’s somewhat heavy for backpacking but in an emergency it’s not so heavy that you wouldn’t carry it. It comes in at around 3lbs with fuel.
Being a dual fuel stove was one of the main reasons I bought this stove. The fuels you can use are either Coleman Fuel or regular Unleaded Gasoline. To me this makes a great Bug Out Bag stove because in the event something major happens in the world that forces you to have to travel lite chances are there will be some cars with gas sitting in the tanks. Now I’ve thought about the possibility that those tanks will be siphoned long before I get there but there will most likely be some gas in the lines that lead to the engine or the very bottom of the tank. It could be used if filtered a little with a rag first.
The stove burns hot with it’s one 10,500 BTUs burner but the base is so narrow that the stove will flip if you have to big of a pan sitting on top. The way to fix this is to either find level ground or dig a small hole and bury the bottom 1/4 to 1/2 inch of the fuel tank. Also making sure your pan is centered helps a bunch.
Another good feature of this stove is the fact you can adjust the burner so you either boil water fast, keep things at a simmer or anything in between. Estimated burn times are 1.75 hours for high burn and 6.5 for low burn. I personally haven’t burned the stove long enough in a single setting to find out if those numbers are true but from reviews I read on the internet before I bought the stove and I believe it. I also found out that this stove (or one just like it by Coleman – maybe the ancestor of this stove?) was used by the boy scouts and many troop leaders (not sure if that’s what they’re called) say that the stove stood up to the misuse and abuse of teenage boys roughing it through the woods.
Stars: 4.8 of 5
Conclusion: If you don’t already have a good single burner stove buy this one. It’s an all around good stove and I’ve never been sorry I bought it.

I love this stove. I’ve had one for 20+ years. The thing never fails, even during winter camping trips. Recently it conked out on me. After monkeying with it awhile I finally figured out that the fuel wasn’t making it to the point of ignition. I tried cleaning it with solvents with no luck. I looked on the Internet for a new generator. it wasn’t easy to find because the stove was so old. $20 later (including shipping) i had one on the way from Campmor. A few turns with the wrench (it came with!!) and I was back in business.
I’d recommend ordering an extra generator to have on hand.
BTW I have a post today on my blog about my Get Home Bag. Seeing how you wrote about getting home a few days ago, you may find it interesting.
